The Loyalist KOS Triathlon receives tremendous support from Loyalist Township, the County of Lennox and Addington and some local corporations. It is with the support of the Township and County that we are able to offer a traffic-free course for all the competitors. The major corporate sponsors of the 2009 Loyalist KOS Triathlon are:

Not only did these corporations provide the financial support necessary to host this race, they provided us with many of the draw prizes we distributed after the race.
Did you receive one? We certainly had lots to distribute.

Well, in retrospect, Sunday, July 12 was a great day for a triathlon; the weather was just about perfect. It was sunny, the temperature was about 26C and there was very little wind. However, as I am sure you all know, the ninth edition of the Loyalist Kids of Steel Triathlon was held the day before, on Saturday, July 11. A completely different day. All in all we were very fortunate, the predicted thunderstorms did not materialise until the evening and we were able to hold the race with only a few minutes of rain falling on the athletes. This happened during the older age groups (most notably the 14-15 age group) and did result in a couple of bike crashes due to the wet roads. Thankfully there were no major inuries and those involved were able to get back up and complete the course. It did start to rain later in the day but we had the entire site taken down by then.

Once again we attracted a significant number of out of town competitors. Athletes travelled from as far as Barrie and Leamington, Ontario and New York State to participate in the event. We anticipated that there would be some great competition and were not dissappointed. Proving that it is getting harder and harder to break the existing course records, only one record was reset this year. Samantha Searle set a new standard for the girls 16-17. The Top Ten list has been updated to reflect this years results. A complete list of results is posted on the 'Results' page and can be found on the Sportstats site. Sportstats has been our choice of timing company every year at this event and once again they did a great job. There were some initial delays due to a link problem with their laptop but they were able to remotely generate the results from Ottawa. Results were calculated and posted on the Ryder truck as soon as they had been reviewed. There were no issues from the point of the OAT official working at the race (Joe Putos.)

Here are some notable achievements from the 2009 race:

The Dave Maskell award was presented for the third time. Dave was our finish line director for five years but sadly succumbed to cancer just after the 2006 Loyalist KOS Tri. Dave's love of triathlon and spirit was infectious and was felt by all who crossed under our finish banner. Dave took up the sport of triathlon after he retired and went on to complete about 15 Ironman triathlons. The Dave Maskell award is awarded to the oldest athlete who is competing in their first triathlon. This year's award went to Brett Roane from Inverary. Brett placed second in the 18-19 age group.

Loyalist Township Community Policing Association (LTCPA) sponsors the Heart Trophy each year. The recepients are selected by LTCPA volunteers with the assistance of additional 'Race Crew' volunteers. The Heart trophy is awarded to two athletes, one boy and one girl that demonstrate the true spirit of the sport, whether it be through continuing the competition despite set backs or demonstrating a love of the sport and a desire to compete.
The recipients this year were:
Kieran Broekhoven and Stephanie Teodoridis. CONGRATULATIONS to both!

All in all it was indeed a great day in Loyalist Township. From the start of the first heat of 16-19 age group athletes to the moment the final 8-9 age group athlete crossed the finish line the race timed out at about 3 hours and 30 minutes.
Just for your information here is what was consumed at the event:

14 x 18L jugs of water from Culligan
5 cases of bottled Culligan water (24 x 591 ml bottles)
10 cases of Vitamin water (12 x 591 ml bottles)
40 bags of ice
10 cases of soft drinks
17 extra large pizzas
9 platters of subs from Subway
200 bags of chips
96 bagels
1 case of oranges
1 case of bananas
5 cans of Gatorade powder
8 large bags of cookies
There may have been additional items but that is most of it.

That's it for the 2009 Loyalist Kids of Steel Triathlon. The race will be back in 2010. Race day will be Saturday, July 11th (it is always the second Saturday in July.)

If you have any feedback for this year's race we would love to hear from you. What did we do right? What did we do right, what did we do wrong? Anything we can improve on? We welcome your comments, positive and negative.
THANKS FOR CHOOSING TO ATTEND OUR RACE AND WE HOPE TO SEE YOU BACK NEXT YEAR!

I will leave you with a few additional images from this year's race just to remind you of what a great day it was. These images were taken by one of the photographers working at the race. If you are interested in purchasing an image from the race, check out Jane Spencer's web site.
