The Amherstview KOS Triathlon was the predecessor of the current Loyalist KOS Triathlon. The Amherstview KOS race attracted up to 200 athletes from across Ontario and Quebec. The race was held at the same location as is currently used for the Loyalist race. The creative force behind the Amherstview KOS was Kathy Splinter of Amherstview. Kathy was the race director for the first three years and can claim some credit for the creation of the Loyalist KOS Triathlon as well. The Loyalist KOS Triathlon's present race director worked as the Amherstview KOS Triathlon's bike & run route Co-Ordinator for three years. It was this involvement and familiarity with the event that provided the inspiration for the resurrection of the race as the Loyalist Kids of Steel Triathlon in 2001.

Simon Whitfield displays his third place medal from the 1991 Amherstview Kids of Steel Triathlon. He covered the 400m swim, 10km bike and 5km run in 45:33. He finished behind Brandon Hollywood and Mike Greenberg. Brandon was first in 44:35 and Mike was second in 45:07. Stefan Timms time over the same distance was 41:47. Both Brandon and Mike were from Ottawa. Brandon is the son of Joan and Rudy Hollywood, the original organizers of the Sharbot Lake Triathlon. Joan is now OAT's Technical Director. Mike was the person that finished second behind Simon when Simon won the K-Town long course triathlon in 1997 (2 km swim, 55 km bike, 15 km run). Nicholas McGraw was the youngest competitor in 1995 (4 & half years old). Nicholas returned to the Loyalist KOS Tri in 2001 as a competitor in the 9-10 year age group (now classified at the 10-11 age group). Nicholas won his age group in 2001 and has since won his age group in 2002, 2003 and 2004. He holds the distinction of being the only athlete to achieve age group victories for four consecutive years. He also won the 12-13 age group Provincial title for the two years he was in that age group. Shown with Nicholas is his younger sister Leah (far left) who also competes at the Loyalist KOS Tri.
